back from our trip

Srikar had a good trip to CA. He was excited to see his grandparents especially grandma who flew to CA few days before him. Unfortunately he caught cold and cough the next day, but that did not prevent him from enjoying himself. He was pampered a lot by his uncle & aunt. He was fussy intially when we got in the plane. He did not want to sit in our laps. Once the engine started, he was eagerly listening to the sound and the announcements, and slept after sometime.

I met Shawna who had a left hemi redo after 30 yrs of her first surgery at U.C.Davis . Dad and Srikar couldn't make it as they were sick.

Our neurologist called us this week to discuss about srikar's surgery. He recommended us going ahead with a redo to remove the remaining tissue and also disconnect the hemispheres. We haven't heard back from Hopkins yet.

trying to crawl

It has been a long time since I updated about Srikar. No major milestones, but he is improving a lot. His is trying to crawl on his tummy. His head control improved a lot. He is babbling and shouting for hours and wants somebody to play with him all the time when he is awake. Though he doesn't like the ramp, he gets down the ramp and tries to move some distance. He is working on his sitting posture.
He thinks grandma is to pamper him and feed him, but not for therapy. He doesn't let grandma do therapy, and whenever he is hungry and sees grandma he starts to cry for food, eventhough me and dad are sitting right there, he doesn't bother to ask us.

We called Hopkins couple of weeks ago to discuss about his seizures. They asked us to send them latest MRI and EEG which he had this week. We tried four medications with no success in controlling his seizures. MRI clearly showed a connection between left and right hemisphere, and the neurologist thinks the seizures are originating from his left hemisphere in the deep midsection.

We will be flying to California during Thanksgiving week to his uncle's place. We always notice that when we are outdoors for couple of hours and after coming home, Srikar behaves as if he missed home and is excited and happy to be home. This will be an intersting trip to see how Srikar takes it.

rolling over

Srikar rolled over for the first time today after the surgery. He used to rollover once in while before the surgery. He was trying to roll over for the last three days. Today morning I put him on his back. He turned to his side and was trying to roll over. He is trying his best to do so. Finally after 8~10 tries he rolled over and was smiling at me. He rolled over couple of times today by himself.

Our little guy still has cough and runny nose. He got a break from his therapy this week.

fever

Srikar is having fever from Thursday afternoon. Yesterday we took him to pediatrician, for blood test just to make sure his fever is not due to infection. Blood test came out normal. He was only taking milk for the last two days. He looks very tired and dehydrated. He is feeling little better today. He had little bit of solids for lunch. He is having more seizures than usual due to his fever.
We went to a Plastic surgeon at Children's Medical for Srikar's nevus and extra tissue on his left cheek and neck last week. The doctor told there isn't any laser which works for his nevus and because of the possible shunt infection they cannot do anything about the extra tissue. I was disappointed with the doctor's response. I was hoping laser could remove his nevus.
We will start Developmental services with ECI from next monday. It is going to be 3 sessions/month and increase it to 4 sessions/month.
He is babbling a lot nowadays, and is also getting used to ramp. He loves to play peek-a-boo.

New Ramp

So this week had been a productive week. We noticed that Srikar is creeping a little when placed on his tummy. So we thought that if he is kept on some slope he will try to crawl. So last weekend we went to the Home Depot and built a ramp for Srikar. Father and Grandpa were the ones who built it and from a couple of days we are placing Srikar in the ramp.

On the first day Srikar was a little scared of the new development from flat surface to an inclined surface but yesterday and today he is doing much better. He isn't crawling yet but he is creeping little and little to reach the bottom end. And sometimes if he is angry he just lies there as if he is protesting... :) ...

Thank you Brande and Monika for your valuable information about the ramp. It was very helpful.

His therapy is also going great. He has been much more active in his OT, PT and ST. All his therapists are happy with his development. He has been holding his head straight much longer and he has been sitting in his Bumbo seat for a longer time.

Thanks to Srikar's Therapists Sarah (PT), Alyssa (OT) and Darrah (ST) for working so hard with Srikar and be a part of his progress.

starting new medication

Srikar is put on new medication to control his myoclonic jerks. He is having 20 ~25 of those everyday. Sometimes he is not bothered by those, but sometimes he takes few seconds to come out of those.
His incision on his stomach and head are healing well according to the Neurosurgeon who did shunt surgery.
Srikar also had appointment with Pediatric opthalmologist last week. His optic nerves are looking fine, but his eyes are little bit out of sync which is common in Hemi kids. Opthalmlogist might do a small procedure to correct his eyes in future. But for now we wait and see how he develops.

Nowadays he is enjoying his therapy and also finding ways to get away. He acts as if he is tired and wants to sleep As soon as I bring him out he is all smiling and shouting. He is using his left hand to explore other things and is moving his right hand up and down when he is happy and angry.

He is having great time with his grandparents and aunt.

A Pretty Tough Week

This week had been pretty tough for our little champ. Srikar slept all day on Tuesday (21st) and was not interested in taking food. Even though he woke up a couple of times he was not able to open his eyes and was fussing really bad. So we called his Neurologist and described the symptoms and he told us to go to ER and get a CT done.

We went to the ER and CT was done. Srikar was moved to PICU. On Wednesday LP was done to determine the pressure. LP indicated that Srikar was having hydrocephalus. On Wednesday also Srikar was sleeping all day till the LP. After LP he became more fussy. He started crying a lot. We were worried. We were told that he is having Hydrocephalus he needs a shunt in his brain. and there will be an incision in his head and a small incision near his abdomen.

On Thursday afternoon Dr. Price conducted the surgery and placed the shunt. Everything went well during the surgery. After the shunt surgery Srikar was sleeping all day. In the evening he woke up a little bit. But he was still not taking anything by mouth. On Friday he looked much better. We were moved to the upper floor out of the PICU. He started having his milk.

Saturday was a happy day for Srikar and all of us. We returned home by 2:00pm. Everything went well and Srikar is now much better. With the shunt in place he looks more active than I saw him on Tuesday. A tough week for our champ.. But champions never quit. :)

Please keep Srikar in your prayers and pray for his quick recovery and good health. Thank you all..

Hemispherectomy Reunion and post-op visit

Srikar had EEG and CT done last week. The startles that we are seeing do not register in the EEG like typical seizures, but from the way they looked in the video, his neurologist is leaning towards considering them and treating them as seizures. The CT did not indicate hydrocephalus. Regarding his post-op visit Dr. Carson (Neurosurgeon) is pleased with Srikar's post-op progress and thinks his myoclonic seizures might also be due to his nervous system still rewiring. Dr. Vining (neurologist) recommended couple of medicines for Srikar's Myoclonic seizures. Dr.Vining and Dr.Carson looked at the CT and think intracranial pressure is not an issue. Srikar started cooing, holding his head and definitely smiling a lot which he lost before surgery due to development regression from seizing. Because of the signs of progress, Dr.Vining and Dr.So do not think his current seizures need further surgery, at least in the short-term.

We had an amazing weekend at the reunion and it was nice meeting other kids and their families.

Srikar was also excited to be at the reunion. He didn't take his naps during daytime during those two days. He was looking at the people and lights and posing for the photographers.

Flying was breeze. Srikar was sleeping most of the time during our flight. We have met many familes and thier amazing kids and learned their stories. We did not get to meet all of the kids. Hoefully we will get to know more of them at the next reunion.

Neurologist appointment

Srikar had his neurologist (Dr. S0) appointment yesterday. Srikar is having startles from last few days, which we think might be seizures. Neurologist also mentioned that they might be myoclonic seizures, and wanted to do an 24 hr EEG monitoring. We mentioned him that we are going to John Hopkins next week for a follow up appointment and he scheduled monitoring for monday and tuesday, so that Dr. Vining at J.H can also check the results .

stomach bug

Srikar had stomach bug for last two days. He was throwing up whatever he ate. I tried some new food day before yesterday. Not sure if that caused it. We were scared those two days thinking if it is hydrocephalus. From yesterday he stopped throwing up and is taking some solids. His fevers are also down from yesterday. But he had two sizures today which lasted 10 sec.

He is doing well with his OT after I changed to morning sessions. He have one OT in the afternoon and I am trying to change it to morning. He had one afternoon session yesterday, but was very tired and looked exhausted due to the heat. He had his first PT session today morning which he didn't like because of the hard work. He was tired after the PT and had a short nap.

Srikar will be celebrating his 1st brithday this saturday, yaaay..he is going to be 1. :)

still running fever

Srikar is still having fever. We went to pediatrician for a blood test and urine test on monday to check for any infection. All the tests came out negative for infection. We went to OT this week twice, which didn't go well. During the first session he started having fever and became fussy. So I had to take him home. During his second visit all of the sudden he became fussy and was crying. Even though he was looking at the therapist, he was also looking for me to make sure I am there. We couldn't continue, so I had to take him home. Last two therapies were at afternoon. I am not sure if it is the time, or the room or the therapist he is not comfortable with. So next time we decided to try one session in the morning and a different room and see how he does.

His food intake also went down due to fever. Hopefully his fevers will go down soon.

Thursday, June 4, 2009

fever

Srikar is having fever for the last two days. Due to his fever he is not taking much food. We went to pediatrician today and he wants us to wait couple of days for blood test as srikar is not showing any symptoms of infection. His fevers are ranging from 99.8 ~ 101.5. He is very irritated during his fever.

His neurologist increased his dosage of Depakote as he is having seizures. Hopefully his fever will be gone pretty soon. We are hoping to start his therapy from next week if he is fever free.

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

therapy

Srikar had his therapy evaluation this week for speech, PT(physical therapy) and OT(Occupational therapy). He will be going for a 1 speech/week, 2 PT/week and 2~3 OT/week. He is sleeping most of the time as he is feeling very tired after 15 ~20 mins of therapy.

He started smiling more and is making some sounds which we haven't heard before.
He is still having fevers and seizures once in a while, which we are hoping him to outgrow as time passes by. He is trying to hold his head again.

His incision and wound are healing well. It might take 2 more weeks for his wound to heal completely.

surprisingly taking bottle

Srikar is surprisingly taking bottle from today morning. We had an appointment with a feeding therapist as per his Neurologist suggestion. Therapist is happy to see him take bottle and eat and some solids. So she didn't have much to work with him. If the neurologist is happy with his feeding we might take off his NG tube tomorrow

Dallas here we come......

Finally out of Hospital !!!!

Hi all.... As I am blogging from the room in Children's House Srikar is laying on the adjacent bed having his feed. Yes, we are out of the Hospital. Yesterday we were a little sure we will be out of the hospital in this week and today by evening 6:00 pm we were discharged from the hospital and we are now at the Children's House. Everything is well with Srikar. He had an EEG this morning and Dr. Vining confirmed that no seizure activity was recorded during the EEG. But he had one just before the EEG.

Other than not taking his food by bottle Srikar is doing great. For now they taught us how to feed using the NG tube. So for now all his food is through a small pump. From morning all people from different departments worked with us and helped us get out of the hospital. It is 35 days we were in the hospital. Srikar has an appointment tomorrow morning at Kennedy Krieger Rehab center and Friday morning he has an appointment with Dr. Vining.

And the good news we will be back home in Dallas on Saturday. Tickets are booked and Srikar is all excited to get back home from here as soon as possible. (And we are too).

not taking bottle

Srikar stopped taking bottle from last week. His swallow test today came out to be normal, and nobody could explain us why he is not taking bottle. When we gave him some puree he took it. He did not have any fevers from last two days which is very exciting. He had seizures three times today. He had one when the neurologist is checking him. He might get an EEG tomorrow to check where the seizures are originating. I hope he is not getting them from his good side. Just when we think things are starting to improve, we go backwards again. He is sleepy most of the time from last few days. He looks very very tired.
Since his swallow test came out normal, we might go home sometime this week with a feeding tube.
We are tired ,exhausted and badly want to go home. We are hoping he will feel better once we go home.

A Happy day

Hi... So finally Srikar shouted at me today. Wasn't well yesterday so was not able to visit Srikar yesterday. So when I went to see him this morning he looked at me for some time like a minute and then shouted at me with a smile. As if he's asking me " Where have you been?". I can't express the heights of my happiness. First time he has done something like this after the surgery. Just wanted to share this happy moment. Srikar is doing fine and well. Don't know yet when we will be discharged from here but we will have a better picture by tomorrow morning.

Mom was holding him he had the seizures. And these lasted for like 15 seconds each. These were the longest after the surgery. Just came to know abt this. thought of updating. Please pray for Srikar's quick recovery. Thank you.

A day of relief

Today was a day of relief. In the afternoon Srikar was taken for the MRI and the Spinal Tap. He was there for around 3 hrs. They stopped his antibiotics last night. He had fever last night. But they are not a regular as they were used to be. Today it spiked up after 14 hrs which used to be a 6 hr interval. We was given anesthesia for his lumbar puncture so he was sleeping all day. He woke up in the middle for a little bit but again went back to sleep. I will say he was sleeping like a baby when I left the hospital :).

In the eveing Dr. Carson came by to tell us that there is nothing in the MRI to be worried about. Everything is fine with his MRI and the Lumbar puncture also was clear. He also told us that his spinal fluid looked clear and the initial tests are all negetive. But they are testing it for another couple of days to see if there is anything. He had a little fever in the evening.

A day of relief for our little guy. Mostly of the anesthesia but we r happy that he is so peacefully asleep today.

Fussy Days Yesterday and Today

It will be a whole month tomorrow since we arrived at John Hopkins Hospital here in Baltimore. Srikar is doing ok but his fevers are not coming down. He is getting fevers every 6 hours. He is been staying very fussy all the time. He has been crying a lot. Yesterday we saw him a little happy in the evening. He was doing all the moving his hands and legs act that he used to do at home. He was playing along with us.

But again at night he vomited his milk. He was very fussy all day today. I think he is angry with the doctors and nurses. Everytime they come he will start crying. I think he wants to go home.

They were scheduled to do a spinal tap today and an MRI scan tomorrow. But I think they scheduled them both for tomorrow. They still can't figure out why his fevers are spiking up every 6 hours. So they are stopping his antibiotics tonightand see if they are causing the fever.

Yesterday I was happy to see Srikar the way he used to be. playing, hitting is hands and legs to the bed, making faces, trying to talk as if he has lots to say. And of course a new habit. I will post the video later.

Thank you all for keeping Srikar in your prayers and praying for his well being.

seizures

Srikar is still battling with high fevers. He had a CT scan today and everything looks OK according to the doctors. He had a seizure today afternoon which lasted for 7 sec. He had a seizure day before yesterday, but we weren't sure if it is a seizure or not. But today he definitely had one. Dr. Vining his neurologist doesn't have an answer right now for his seizure, but she thinks it might be due to his high fever. It is scary to see him seizuring especially after the surgery.

Please keep Srikar in your prayers

fever

Srikar is having high fevers from last two days. He is having fever every 6~8hrs. Doctors stopped his antibiotics on Friday to check if his fever is due to reaction by medicine. He had high fever on Saturday and is back on antibiotics. He is getting two antibiotics from saturday, but his fever is still not under control.

Please keep Srikar in your prayers.

infection

Srikar is having fever for the last few days. He is having high fever from today.
Yesterday he had Lumbar Puncture to check for any infection. But the fluid did not show of any infection. His white blood cell count is also very high, for a few days. His blood test result came out to be normal. But till now they are not able to find out what infection he might be having. He had a CT scan done few hours ago. we are waiting on the results.

His staples were removed yesterday. He still has the fluid in his head on the left side.

Please pray for Srikar that his fever and infection goes away pretty soon.

out of PICU

Srikar is out of PICU today morning. His sleep timings are really messed up. He is sleeping all day and kind of awake during night. We tried to feed him through bottle today to check if can take food by mouth. He did fine with the bottle. We will try to give him more feeds through bottle tomorrow. He is trying to cry whenever he is uncomfortable, but he is not able to do becasue of hoarse voice due to the breathing tube. So we are not able to know how he doing with the pain.

Friday, April 24, 2009

waiting to leave PICU

Srikar was more awake today evening. He was trying to chew his left hand, (due to teething) which he is used to do before the surgery. He was moving his left hand and leg . He is moving little bit of his right hand and leg. He looks very very tired though. We are supposed to leave the PICU today, but waiting for a bed to become available in the other floor.

Thursday, April 23, 2009

shaking

We had concerns yesterday about Srikar's shaking and tremors. Yesterday evening I noticed that Srikar was shaking his good hand (left hand). Initially I thought he might be cold and covered him. But later I saw his hand still shaking and he is lip smacking and lightly raising his eyebrows. We are concerned and let the PICU doctor know this. He said that it might be seizures or might be shaky due to sedation for long time. Today morning we discussed this with Neuro surgeon and Neurologist and both of them assured that, this is due to the brain healing and rewiring process. They are expecting more shaking for few more weeks. We are relieved to know that these are all part of brain healing process.

Otherwise Srikar is doing good and we might be out of PICU tomorrow.

Drain tube is out

Srikar had his drain tube removed this evening from his head.
He got very nasty skin rashes on his cheeks and forehead due to the bandages used to hold his breathing tube and head. Looks like his rashes are irritating and he is using his left hand to rub on it.
If Srikar takes it well we might be out of PICU in a couple of days.

breathing tube is out

Srikar is recovering slowly. His breathing tube was removed today. He opened his eyes yesterday, but looked very drowsy. Today he is little more awake, but still very very sleepy.
The wrap around his head was removed this morning, and we can see the incision and staples. We had a hard time looking at his incision and staples. The drain from his head will be removed soon.

Thank you all for your prayers and continue to keep him in your prayers.

04/20 Update

Today Srikar seemed to be more like Srikar. Swelling on his face is reduced by a considerable amount. His bed is raised to an angle of 35 degrees. He is sticking his tongue a little bit out (He always used to do that at home). His cheeks are still a little swollen. He is moving his left hand alot. They have reduced his sedation and they are planing to remove his air tube by tomorrow. And they are also thinking to wake him up tomorrow. They started to feed him the formula again today. Dr. Vining came by to check on him in the evening.

We also received a package from "The Hemispherectomy Foundation" for Srikar. Thank you for praying for Srikar's recovery and well being. Coincidentally its his 10th month B'day today. Hopefully he will cut his cake in a couple of days.

Another Update!!!!

Just came back from the hospital after visiting Srikar. He is doing fine. His head is raised another 20 degrees. His swelling is lot less than this morning. He is having some urine infection and is being treated with antibiotics. He is moving his body a little bit. In the morning his eyelids were all swollen up but now he looks a lot like himself. Yesterday his nose was completely leveled into his face. Now I can see his nose. He is recovering slowly.

Update 04/19

Hi,
Srikar is doing fine. He is looking a little less swollen than yesterday. Yesterday they turned his head to straight from right. He looked to me all swollen up yesterday. Today morning he seemed to be less swollen. His temperature is normal and his heart rate is stable. Yesterday his heart rate was all over the place which made us a little worried. But today its all fine. They raised his head a little to an angle of 10 degrees and keep it that way for about 24 hours.

Srikar is doing fine and is recovering. Thank you all for your prayers for his well being. Please keep him in your prayers for his recovery.

The Day After!!!

10:00 am - Went and visited Srikar. He is doing fine.. But lots of tubes and pipes going in and out of him.. I think there are like 10 -12 things connected to his body. We are told he is doing fine and there are no seizures so far.

11:50 am - Just came back from the PICU. Srikar is doing fine. Dad is sitting besides him. He is moving a little once in a while which is good as per Dr. Vining who dropped by this morning to check on Srikar.

2:20 pm - Just went to check on Srikar again. He is doing fine. They started feeding him formula by tube today.

3:50 pm - Dr. Carson came by to check on Srikar. He said that he is pleased with Srikar's progress. Dr. Carson said the moments in Srikar are exactly what he has expected. He joking said that Srikar might have read the manual and is doing exactly by the book.. :).. He also said that the functionality might have been transferred to the good side before the surgery itself.

I got a chance to take a picture of him this morning but I am not posting the picture here on the blog. But I am putting the link below. Please be advised that he is connected with many pipes and tubes going in and out of his body. Its not a pretty sight. If you want to see the pictures the link is below. Viewer discretion is advised.

8:30 pm - I just came after checking on Srikar. 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm was shift change so we had to leave. We went back at 8:00 and Srikar is doing fine. Everything is going accordingly. He looks a bit more swollen but we were told that it is normal for 24 to 48 hours of surgery.

10:00 pm - I went again into the ICU to check on Srikar. He is doing fine. They were cleaning his food tube and air tube at the time I went in. He is moving a little. His right eye look a little more swollen than I saw him last time. He is also having a little low temperature but nothing to worry about.

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. Please keep praying for Srikar. Please keep Srikar in your prayers for his quick recovery.

11:00 pm - We came back from the hospital just now and Srikar is stable and doing fine. We got a chance to take another picture of him and it is added to the link below. Viewer discretion is advised.

Thank you all for you well wishes and support. Please keep praying for Srikar's quick recovery.

Day of the Surgery

Hi,

4:45 am - Today is the day of the surgery. We all woke up pretty early. Srikar is still asleep. Praying to God to be with Srikar and us at all the times and give us strength and courage. We have to take him to the pre-op by 6:00 am.

6:00 am - Just came to the pre-op room at John Hopkins Hospital. Waiting for the paper work. Srikar is still sleeping.

7:15 am - Srikar is all ready for his surgery. Only one parent is allowed to take him into the operating room. His dad took him into the OR. He just went into the OR. We are waiting in the waiting area. Praying for everything to go smoothly.

9:15 am - Just got a word from the OR. They are about to begin the surgery and everything is going smoothly so far.

11:20 am - Dr. Vining just came from the OR and told us that everything is going on smoothly.

12:50 pm - Dr. Vining came by again to tell us the surgery is going on smoothly and Srikar is doing fine. They started removing the tissue. The gave us the hair of Srikar which was shaved off his head beore the surgery as we requested. She told us everything is going on as planned and smooth. She told us that they have removed the temporal lobe and are working on the frontal lobe.

2:35 pm - Dr. Vining came in to give us the update. Everything is going on well. She told us that they are working on the Parietal Lobe. 2/3 of the Frontal Lobe has been sucessfully removed. There is a little more bleeding than expected but she said that is not unusual amount.

2:45 pm - We got another update call from inside the OR. They told us everything is going on smoothly, but we still are hours away from the completion of the surgery. Dr. Vining told us earlier that the surgery is going on a little slower than usual.

4:50 pm - Dr. Vining just came in and gave us an update. All the abnormal tissue has been removed. She told us that they have started cleaning up and closing which will take another hour or hour and half. Everything went as expected as far as resection is concerned.

7:00 pm - Dr. Carson just came by and told us that the surgery is complete and Srikar will be coming out of OR in a few minutes. He said that Srikar tolerated the long surgery very well. The surgery took longer than expected due to tissue abnormality and coagulation issues at the end of the sugery. Dr. Carson said that everything has been taken care of. Dr. Carson termed the surgery to be "Intresting".

7:20 pm - Well, after a little over 12 hours Srikar came out of the OR. They took him into the PICU. By God's Grace everything went well and smoothly.

11:00 pm - Just came back to the room from the PIC. Srikar is doing fine.

From Uncle To Nephew

Hi Srikar..
May God be with you in these hard times and be always on ur side. Get well soon..
luv..
Uncle.

Srikar

This is Srikar. He is 9 months old. A few months ago Srikar was diagnosed with seizures(infantile spasms). The MRI showed that he has dysplastic(abnormal) tissue on the left side of his brain. The EEG testing showed seizures originating from left side almost continuously. The only way to control his seizures is to undergo a procedure in which left half of cerebral cortex will be removed. He will be undergoing the surgery at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on 15th April.
